In The Spirit of Earth

You know the reason I love the stars is because we can’t hurt them: we can’t burn them, we can’t melt them, we can’t make them overflow, we can’t flood them or burn them up—so we keep reaching for them.
― Laurie Anderson

I get high on atmosphere emanating from earth and sky, even higher from the seas and beyond. When I gaze at shadows, I lean into light. When I absorb the spirit of sunset & moonrise, I angle for reflection(s)—inhale the hues of tide. Rock faith in the heartbeat of nature far exceeds my gossamer confidence in earthlings.

Fueled by clean energy evasion, errant humans obsessed with excess, continue to invigorate the wreckage of the planet. If plastic production continues to increase (as predicted) the oceans will carry more plastic than fish by 2050. And if by ignorance, inaction or malignant greed, we fail to heed nature’s onslaught, warning us of climate change—we hurtle into the void. The arrogance of humankind’s achievements (gone wrong) will cause the Arctic to become ice-free and sea levels to rise 1–8 feet by 2100. Stronger, more intense hurricanes will unfurl their devastating wrath, millions of lives will evaporate from droughts and heat waves, frequent wildfires will scorch any semblance of existence, and bizarre precipitation events will be matched by catapulting temperatures. A flawless scenario to ensure the extinction of plant and animal species due to loss of habitat—and render lands uninhabitable for humans.

If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.
— Lao Tzu

We have less than 7 years, 91 days and 14 seconds to limit global warming to 1.5° C before effects of climate change will be irreversible. By the time you read this blog, how many seconds closer will we be to the vanishing point?  Check it out. https://climateclock.world

How many Earth Days will we count? To clinch the survival of our species, it’s time to shun coal, plant a tree, purify contamination, prohibit toxic profit and ban lethal chemicals. Let’s replace hubris with humility, testify to science, restore with renewables—and switch to lean & green.

In celebration of Earth Day 4/22/2022—let’s bow to the Earth—embrace wind & sun. Sway and pulse with spirits on moonlit shores. And soar from turquoise sea to stars!

  1. Excellent post offering reverence on this Earth Day. A call to action not to be soon forgotten. Profound and informative. I’m left with new perspective.
“7 years, 91 days and 14 seconds” …and counting. That’s less time than my son has been alive. Thankfully he’s our little Earth activist at 8 years old. By the time he is 16….perhaps we will surprise ourselves.

It’s a very powerful piece — a call to action, and love, for our shared home. “Malignant Greed” is a great term, another poem ….

  3. If only the tyrants, autocrats, despots, narcissists, egoists and powerhungry would read this and believe it, there would be hope for a safe future of our world.
